CCSL Transition to New Standards Beginning in 2016 Spring League

On September 16, 2015 the Cal North Board of Directors announced Cal North’s adoption of US Soccer’s calendar year age groupings, and small sided standards for state level, district level and inter-league play effective for the 2016/17 season. Following that announcement, the implementation of the calendar year age groupings was changed by US Soccer. Cal North has adopted the newest US Soccer standards for Calendar year registration.

CCSL will begin the transition to the new standards beginning with the 2016 Spring League.

Spring League Age Groups:

CCSL will transition to Calendar Year age groups for players born in 2003 and younger. Players born in 2002 and older will remain on the Seasonal Year age groups.

Teams will continue to be allowed to create Secondary or Off Season Rosters which can include previously registered players from several different Cal North fall season teams and new Cal North registered players. Teams can also choose to keep their Primary Seasonal Year rosters for CCSL Spring League.

All teams will be placed in age groups based upon the age of their oldest player regardless of the makeup of their roster.  CCSL Staff will try to place them with the best possible playing bracket within their age group.

Spring League Small Sided games:

To assist Cal North Clubs and teams in the transition to the new standards, CCSL will adopt modified standards for teams currently playing 8v8 Small Sided games for the CCSL Spring 2016 Season and be fully compliant for the Fall 2016 season.

7v7: Players born in 2008 – U8

7v7: Players Born in 2007 – U9

9v9: Players Born in 2006 – U10

9v9: Players Born in 2005 – U11

11v11: Players Born in 2004 and Older

CCSL has a long tradition of transitioning from small sided games to 11 v11 in spring league for U11 teams to accommodate the early formation of teams moving to U12. We will continue to apply this approach for teams transitioning to the new small sided standards, so teams will play the same format in spring that they will be playing in the next fall season.

We believe that the transition to calendar year age groups for younger teams will be consistent with tryout team formation windows for the majority of Northern California teams. Cal North has communicated and cooperated with Norcal administrators to develop a coordinated plan to simplify the transition to the new standards for the Northern California soccer community.

Cal North and CCSL understand that Clubs have a substantial investment in goals and fields. While we believe that Clubs should work to provide game fields consistent with the new US Soccer standards, Clubs may continue using 7 x 21 goals currently in use for CCSL 8v8 games and existing fields for CCSL League games even if they are slightly larger than the announced US Soccer Standards. Where appropriate, clubs may reduce the size of fields for 7v7 games using low flexible cones.

More information will be posted on the Cal North website and distributed to Cal North Leagues and Clubs as it becomes available.
